Data Sources

  • Solar installation counts: EIA Form 861, SEIA/Wood Mackenzie Solar Market Insight
  • Household counts: US Census Bureau ACS
  • Solar production estimates: NREL PVWatts v8
  • Installation costs: NREL/LBNL Tracking the Sun, EnergySage marketplace
  • Electricity rates: EIA average residential rates

Zip Code Estimates

Zip-level estimates are derived from state adoption rates applied to average zip code household counts (~8,500). Actual neighbourhood adoption may vary based on income, home age, utility territory, and local incentives. Range shown reflects ±30% variance to account for local variation.

Financial Estimates

Savings assume net metering at the average residential electricity rate. Federal ITC is 30% (2024–2032 under the Inflation Reduction Act). State and local incentives are not included in the simplified financial snapshot but can significantly reduce costs further. Use our Incentive Stack Calculator for exact amounts.

Why Social Proof Matters

Research shows that seeing neighbours adopt solar is the strongest predictor of going solar yourself (Bollinger & Gillingham 2012, “Peer Effects in the Diffusion of Solar Photovoltaics”). This tool quantifies that social proof with real data.
