The Starting Point

Our electric bills had been climbing for years. In the summer of 2024, we hit $280 in a single month — and that was with the thermostat set to 78°F. Our 1,800 sq ft ranch-style home in Sarasota, FL was eating through electricity, mostly from air conditioning and our aging water heater.

We'd been "solar curious" for a while but didn't know where to start.

Research Phase

We spent about three weeks researching. Key steps:

  1. Pulled 12 months of utility bills — averaged about 1,100 kWh/month
  2. Got quotes from 4 installers — prices ranged from $2.50/W to $3.40/W
  3. Used USAPOWR tools to size the system and estimate ROI
  4. Checked incentives — the 30% federal ITC was the big one

The Numbers

| Item | Amount | |------|--------| | System size | 8.2 kW (20 × 410W panels) | | Gross cost | $24,600 | | Federal ITC (30%) | −$7,380 | | Net cost | $17,220 | | Financing | Solar loan, 25-year, 4.99% | | Monthly payment | $91 | | Old electric bill | $200/mo avg | | New electric bill | $18/mo avg | | Net monthly savings | ~$91 |

What We Learned

  • Get at least 3 quotes. Our final installer was $3,000 cheaper than the most expensive one for the same panels and inverter.
  • Panel orientation matters. Our south-facing roof section was perfect — the installer said we'd lose 15% with an east-facing setup.
  • Permitting took 6 weeks. The install itself was done in 2 days, but interconnection with FPL took another month.
  • The ITC is massive. Without it, our payback would have been 11+ years instead of ~7.

Advice for Others

If you're in Florida, solar makes a ton of sense. The sun is strong, electricity rates keep climbing, and the federal tax credit is still at 30%. Start with your bills, get multiple quotes, and don't rush the decision.

This is a composite story based on real homeowner experiences in the Sarasota, FL area. Individual results vary based on system design, shading, utility rates, and program availability.
